Amos Anderson, killed in hit-and-run just outside of his home in Mitchell County

A man is dead following a Friday night hit-and-run incident just outside of Pelham.

At around 7 p.m., the Mitchell County 911 center received a call about a hit-and-run, according to Mitchell County Coroner Jamey Thompson.

Thompson was called out to Mt. Olive Road where a pedestrian, later identified as 88-year-old Amos Anderson, was hit and killed by a vehicle.

At the time of the incident, Anderson was picking up debris just outside of his home, according to Sheriff W.E. Bozeman.

According to investigators, he was found by a passerby in a car. A neighbor heard tires screeching in that area around 6:13 p.m. but thought nothing of it.

Bozeman said they are working to locate the vehicle and the driver.

GSP’s Crash Reconstruction Team (CRT) will try to ping cellphones that were in the area at the time of the hit-and-run. They will also try to check reports of single-vehicle accidents in the county.

Thompson said the incident is being investigated by the Mitchell County Coroner’s Office, the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, and the GSP Crash Reconstruction Team.

Fatal car accidents continue to be a tragic reality that impacts communities across the United States with alarming frequency. According to data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 700 lives are lost on average each week as a result of these devastating crashes, translating to over 100 individuals per day. Over the course of a year, this sobering statistic amounts to over 40,000 fatalities.

Accidents often arise from drivers engaging in reckless behaviors such as speeding, driving while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, distractions caused by electronic devices, and failure to yield to other vehicles or pedestrians.

The aftermath of these heartbreaking incidents brings about profound grief and loss for loved ones. Moreover, families often encounter significant financial challenges. The costs associated with funerals and burial services can quickly soar, sometimes reaching tens of thousands of dollars. This financial strain can be overwhelming, exacerbating the distress as families grapple with their sorrow alongside unexpected financial burdens.

Following a fatal traffic accident, seeking legal recourse can be a crucial avenue towards justice and compensation for the families of the victims. For those who are struggling with the loss of a loved one, enlisting the help of a personal injury lawyer is a fundamental step towards securing the rightful compensation. These legal professionals possess the necessary expertise to navigate the complexities of civil injury law and can provide support in easing some of the financial burdens faced by families during such challenging times.

Advocating for justice serves a dual purpose; not only does it aid affected families in their financial recovery, but it also plays a vital role in holding accountable those responsible for negligence. This accountability can offer a sense of closure and potentially contribute to preventing similar tragedies in the future. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Amos Anderson, a victim of such a tragic incident. We remain steadfast in our commitment to pursuing justice for all those impacted, working diligently to amplify their voices and seek resolution.
