13-year-old on joy ride in parents’ car hits bicyclist, sending him to the hospital, police say

Authorities in Georgia say three people, including a 13-year-old, face charges after the teen allegedly hit a man with their parents’ car.

Samuel Jenkins, 60, was riding his bicycle around 3:20 p.m. Sunday when he was hit by a car allegedly driven by a 13-year-old in Pelham. He was hospitalized after sustaining four broken ribs, a cracked skull and a punctured lung, his family says.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Jenkins failed to stop at a stop sign and turned directly in front of the car, which police say the 13-year-old had taken for a joy ride. The car belongs to their parents.

Jenkins, the 13-year-old suspect and a third person were all charged in the incident. Jenkins was charged with failure to stop at a stop sign and driving under the influence, while the 13-year-old was charged with driving without a license. A passenger in the car, who is also a minor, is the third person charged.

”I’m going to be praying for both families because this is a terrible situation,” said Teresa Robinson, a Pelham resident.

Members of the community believe accidents like this could be avoided if children had more local activities.

“We need maybe a roller-skating rink, an arcade game, a bowling alley here in the city of Pelham. We need those things. These things will keep children out of trouble,” Robinson said.

She believes the teens made a huge mistake and hopes they’ve learned their lesson.

“There are consequences for your actions. I just hope that everyone can come together because keep in mind this is a minor, and I don’t feel her life should be lost in the system,” Robinson said.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
